About Enso Bodywork

Enso Symbol

Enso Bodywork has been created as an environment where clients have the opportunity to maximize health in all aspects of life. Working with the body and optimizing how it functions creates awareness and allows movement. Awareness and movement create space for change and the ability to respond well to or be intentional about change is a sign of good health.

Enso was chosen as a symbol for my company because there are many parallels with Soma. At a fundamental level, the symbol itself is one of simplicity and grace. The single brushstroke embodies fluidity and movement - qualities evident in balanced bodies. In Zen buddhism, Enso expresses the moment where the mind is free to let the body create. With Soma, by creating awareness and connection to the body, we can let the logical mind go and allow ourselves freedom to exist through movement, not just thought.

Enso also exemplifies dimensions of the Japanese aesthetic, principles also found in the body and what Soma can facilitate:

  • fukinsei - asymmetry, irregularity
  • kanso - simplicity
  • koko - basic, weathered
  • shizen - without pretense, natural
  • yugen - subtly profound grace
  • datsuzoku - freedom
  • seijaku - tranquility

Finally, the open circle representation of Enso relates to the beauty of imperfection and allows for movement and development - change. This is Soma.

About Alex

Alex

Alex is a Certified Soma Practitioner with a background in chemistry, software development and business management. She is an avid follower of movement arts — she studied and instructed circus/aerial arts and also danced professionally.

Alex first experienced Soma as a model for a practitioner in training. Her curiosity was piqued by the description of Soma and she was interested in increasing her range of motion for dance and aerial. After completing the series, not only did her movement quality change but she was free of the chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain which had resulted from years of working at a desk. Such dramatic effects and the opportunity to work in the area of health and wellness led Alex to switch careers and study Soma.

Movement is a major element in Alex’s life, providing balance, expression and joy, and she sees Soma as a means for facilitating movement in the lives of others. Whether a client is looking for pain relief, improved mobility/athletic performance, or greater body awareness, Alex’s goal is to partner with them in achieving those results. By creating a supportive environment and working collaboratively, Alex provides her clients with an opportunity to maximize growth, change, and health.
